Incidents of Travel in the Yucatan Peninsula part II

As you may have noticed I've been taking a few days off from writing the blog.  I've been working closely with my translator, Tapanandini D.D. on a series of projects, one of which is the creation of an art catalogue for some private collectors in Yucatan.

Teresa Loret de Mola, Tapanandini is a follower of Govinda Maharaja. She is also a distinguished artist in Merida, Yucatan. Teresa Loret de Mola is the daughter of former governor of Yucatan, Carlos Loret de Mola Mediz. She recently ran for mayor of Merida as a citizen-candidate. While the ruling party won, she ran a successful campaign, raising important issues about ecology, education, and spirituality.

We were asked to create a catalogue for an important private art collector. The offer was attractive not only for the work itself and the chance to see Tapanandini, but also for a chance to visit Yucatan again.

Last year we spend two weeks visiting the pyramids of Uxmal and Chichen Itza.

The parallels between the Vishnu temples of Cambodia in Angkor Wat and the ancient pyramids of Mexico has long been a source of personal fascination for me.  Some question whether these ancient temples in Cambodia were actually Vishnu temples, but recent enforcement of laws against the looting of archeological ruins have returned these statues to the local museum:

Koh Ker was a rich source of statues that were looted over the centuries. These artifacts confirm that the temple was used for Vishnu worship. There was an especially exquisite group of figures from the Mahabharata, celebrated Bhima's mace-fight with Duryodhana from the Mahabharata.

Together with the other sculptures that were originally found at the entrance of the pyramid or temple, they may have looked like this:

Here, Bhimasena, left center, confronts Duryodhana. His mace touches the ground at the beginning of the fight as they are about to engage in mortal duel to the death.  This imposing group is only one of thousands of such groups of figures adorning the Cambodian temples, telling the story of the Mahabharat in marble statues that were to have lasted throughout the ages. Unfortunately, since the Angkor temples were brought to Western attention by the French Explorer Henri Mouhout, they have been subject to generations of looters who have destroyed Cambodia's heritage, the memory of the Khmer Empire, and the ability of archeologists to ferret out the ultimate connection between the Khmer and Hindu empires of the greater Bharata civilization.

To what extent was Indian and Vedic knowledge current in the Indochinese world of the past? We may never know.  The ancient Vishnu temples of Angkor were hidden for centuries in the overgrown jungles near the Tonle Sap lake. The Khmer civilization disappeared gradually, probably as a result of drought, overuse of their sophisticated irrigation systems, and invasion by the rising Thai cultures that later constructed Ayutaya. Neglected for years they were ¨discovered¨ by French explorer Henri Mouhout in 1859.Henri Mouhot The French, looking to advance colonial interests in Indochina and convinced there was gold to be found in the ancient ruins, began systematic exploitation and looting under the auspices of archeology. Cambodian archeology has never developed properly, having been interrupted by war, colonialism, greed, more war, and corruption. The French Culture Minister and war hero Andre Malraux made his bones by stealing the famous bas reliefs of Banteay Srei. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/André_Malraux https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banteay_Srei ) As a consequence, despite caricatures of Cambodian culture and history such as those found in the Lara Croft movies, we may never know who the Khmer were, or how their culture was related to India, thanks to looting.

It's hard to believe that the Khmer had anything to do with the Maya, and yet... Both these great cultures thrived on flat land, overgrown with banyan trees. Both cultures created their most important pyramids and temples between around 800 and 1400 AD. Both cultures were incredibly sophisticated, the Khmer developing  vast waterworks and irrigation systems, the Mayans deeply intricate calculations of the movements of the planets. Their mythology involved the worship of the Naga Snake warriors by the Khmer and the Quetzalcoatl Serpent king by the Mayan and Aztecs. Could they be related?

With no discernible budget, but with a deep curiosity, I have spend some time investigating over the past few years. I have been through library after library of translations and studies and have had the chance to visit the ruins both in Cambodia and Mexico.

In the last few years, with the help of Swami Avadhuta and other friends, I have been lucky enough to visit many of these ancient sites. Last year took me to Uxmal and Chichen Itza.

While the Pyramid of the Dwarf at Uxmal is mystical and shrouded by jungle, Chichen Itza is exposed to the sun, majestic, and more formal. Millions of visitors are drawn to these sites every year. They have an overpowering mystic presence and connection with the sun.

Last year, I visited the above sites. This year we saw an archeological site that has only recently been excavated: Ek Balam, close to Valladolid.

 Ek' Balam is a Yucatec-Maya archaeological site not far from Valladollid, Yucatan, Mexico. It fits within the municipality of Temozón, in the Northern Maya lowlands, close to Chichen Itza. From the Preclassic until the Postclassic period, it was the seat of a Mayan kingdom and a small city, where people gathered around the cooling waters of the Cenote or underground water caves.
It houses the  tomb of Ukit Kan Lek Tok', an ancient Mayan king buried in the side of the largest pyramid.

Ek Balam is a more intimate space than Chichen Itza. It's easy to see how the ancient Maya must have lived here, close to the underground water source in jungles surrounded by coconuts, papaya, and good land for planting corn and beans.

We stayed in Valladolid at the Zentik Project Hotel, run by my old friend, Alberto Jordi. Last year I painted a mural of tango dancers for the snack bar. It's still there.

Since I had already created a series of tango dancers as easel paintings, I was confident that I could pull off a mural, even though I hadn't much experience as a mural painter.  Nonetheless, last year's tango painting was a big success, and Alberto and his daughter really loved it.

 This year, I was invited back to the Zentik Project Hotel, which was our base while doing archeological studies at Ek Balam and working on the Art Catalogue in Merida. I visited the snack bar with the finished painting a year later. Mr. Jordi was away on business.

The remaining paint from the mural was used on the tables and chairs to give the whole space a colorful atmosphere.  Aurora and I relaxed at the Zentik Project Hotel which has an ecological Mayan theme and delicious vegetarian cuisine.

Ek Balam

Ek Balam is the place of the Jaguar.  The Jaguar is an important aspect of Mayan mythology. The Mayan mythology celebrates a number of animistic gods including Serpents, Jaguars, and others in ceramics and stone carvings. The king here was considered a representative of the Jaguar.

Valladolid, in Yucatan is a quiet town with a picturesque center. Here's the main church. After visiting here we took off for the sleepy fishing village of San Felipe to see the beach.

You can rent a launch to take you out past the lagoon here to the beaches on the islands off the coast, called Ria Lagartos. It's an ecological reserve, especially for the pelicans which are now endangered.

This group of islands is about 15 minutes by launch from San Felipe. It's an ecological reserve for flamingos and pelicans. 

There's a small beach with some palapas where you can relax in the hammock with a coconut. 

Or stroll out into the cooling waters. There's no waves here, and the water is quite shallow out to where the water turns a deeper blue. It's only about a foot deep and swarming with tiny minnows and fish about the size of your pinky finger. The Pelicans don't even bother with these fish, they're so small, but they dart in and out of your feet as you walk through the sand.

After a long year, it was time for a rest and some relaxation on the beach.

Ria Lagartos islands, off the coast from the sleepy fishing village of San Felipe is about as remote as it gets. We were the only people on the beach. It's close enough to Cancun and Playa del Carmen, but no one ever goes here. Let's keep it a secret. The pelicans will be glad you did.

After a long walk on the beach, it was time for me to begin planning my return.  If you haven't seen any new posts about divine sound, this is because I have been on vacation. Dogmas y Ciencia

Los científicos han sido picados por los dogmas de los ortodoxos desde que empezaron a mirar las estrellas. La astrónoma griega Hypatia de Alejandría fue asesinada por una muchedumbre de fanáticos cristianos instigados por Cirilo de Alejandría, fundador de la Iglesia Ortodoxa.

San Cirilo no sufrió las críticas de las mujeres. Su dogma no daba espacio para el heliocentrismo ni para la doctrina de la transmigración enseñada por Plotino y explorada por Hyparia en sus conferencias. El precio de su herejía era la muerte.

Copérnico mantuvo secreta su teoría heliocéntrica, escapando de la excomunión sólo publicando sus hallazgos póstumamente. Galileo publicó las pruebas para la revolución copernicana y fue peusto en jucio por la Iglesia. Entre otras cosas, Galileo halló que podía observar las órbitas de las lunas de Júpiter con su telescopio. Si las lunas de Júpiter no orbitaban la tierra ¿por qué el resto del sistema solar sería geocéntrico? Por esas peligrosas ideas Galileo fue hallado culpable de herejía. La teoría heliocéntrica fue silenciada por los predicadores del dogma.

El Dogma tiene un Efecto de enfriamiento.

Dondequiera que se forcé, el dogma tiene el efecto de enfriar a los buscadores de la verdad. Y cuando los buscadores de la verdad son silenciados quedamos con los mitos y la superstición. Qué irónico, entonces que los mismos científicos quienes buscan protegernos del pensamiento doctrinal hayan caído víctimas de su propio dogma. Para protegerse de la superstición la ciencia se escondió a sí misma en el laboratorio del positivismo. Al aceptar una epistemología que demanda evidencia ara todo, vieron la forma de proteger al buscador de la verdad del dogma y la doctrina. “Dogma y doctrina son el enemigo de la ciencia basada en hechos” nos dicen. La ciencia apostó por su territorio, se protegió, armada con los hechos.

Pero sutilmente, la ciencia desarrolló una ideología, la ideología del positivismo. Aceptando un marco en el cual solamente son aceptadas las “verdades útiles, descartando lo que no es “pragmático” los científicos asesinaron el alma. Aclamaron la muerte de Dios como el gran logro del S. XIX, procedieron entonces a asesinar el alma en el S. XX

Pero una segunda mirada a esta epistemología demuestra que la mayoría de los hechos etiquetados como tales por el positivismo son en realidad fragmentes únicamente de los hechos. Y ahora, un siglo y medio después del advenimiento del positivismo, los hechos han ido y venido. Vivimos en una zona libre de hechos. Un mundo de noticias falsas en donde “percepción es realidad”. El leader del mundo libre tiene una opinión hoy y una diferente mañana, todas sostenidas con hechos y estadísticas. Nada puede ser más esencialmente americano . Fue Ralph Waldo Emerson quien exhortó a sus estudiantes a “Hablar con palabras fuertes lo que piensas hoy y mañana decir lo que piensas mañana también en palabras fuertes, aunque contradigan todo lo que digas hoy”. Hoy, a través de diversos medios, escuchamos ríos de palabras duras que nos llaman a la acción por la mañana y por la tarde a una acción distinta y opuesta.

Quien Controla el Pasado Controla el Futuro

Esto va más allá de Emerson a Orwell, en lenguaje orwelliano, “Quien controla el pasado controla el futuro, quien controla el presente, controla el pasado”. El propósito de la propaganda es controlar la historia tanto del pasado como del futuro. Mientras las turbas enfurecidas revolotean en las calles y hacen botín de las tiendas, el presidente dice que todo está bien. Los salarios bajos  el trabajo barato es benéfico. Los precios elevados traerán prosperidad. Cuando la gente rica se haga más rica será para beneficio de la nación. Las voces disidentes deben acallarse para el bien del público. Estamos en guerra con Rusia, Rusia es nuestro amigo. Estamos en guerra con Rusia. O como lo pone Orwell “El pasado era alterable. El pasado nunca había sido alterado. Oceanía estaba en guerra con el lejano Oriente. Oceanía siempre había estado en guerra con el Lejano Oriente”. Orwell escribió 1984 en 1948. 69 años más tarde su ficción es realidad. Voluntariamente damos información a las pantallas, permitiendo a Facebook, Instangram, Snatpacht, Skype, Messenger y otros medios sociales trazar cada una de nuestras acciones, mapear todos nuestros movimientos en GPS, conocer y catalogar todos nuestros productos para enviarnos miles de anuncios y mensajes políticos calculados para mantenernos a raya. Tal como lo pone el escritor americano Joseph en su novela Catch 22, “Sólo porque seas paranoico no quiere decir que están tras de ti”.

El Dogma Orwelliano del Positivismo

Si el positivismo era una ideología basada en hechos, lo shechos ya no importan. Si la epistemología científica del último siglo fue “la verdad útil. La verdad ya no importa. Un siglo y medio después de la llegada del positivismo los hechos han venido y se han ido. Vivmos en la zona libre de hechos. Un mundo de noticias falsas en donde la “percepción es la realidad. No estamos interesados en los hechos o “la verdad útil” La verdad se ha devaluado. No es para lo que se resquebrajó a ser. “Lo que es útil” ha sido reemplazado por “lo que es verdad” en este sentido Hawkin tiene razón, la filosofía st+a muerta. Los filósofos ya nos son “útiles” lo que es “útil” es lo que sirve a los paradigmas de la clase dominante, los poderes existentes. Así que la medicina alternativa es rechazada y el conocimiento médico común considerado axiomático es ahora descartado como mera superstición. Con grandes poderes de observación y nuevas tecnologías los hechos han sido cambiados, nos han dicho. Lo que es “útil” es la ciencia y sirve a los intereses coorportativos. “La agricultura corporativa es buena” se nos dice”beneficiará a nuestra nación y alimentará a los hambrientos; la agricultura orgánica es para hippies peligrosos.” Los ortodoxos de la ciencia tal como alguna vez científicos como Copérnico se acobardaron una vez ante la ortodoxia religiosa, los buscadores de la verdad espirituales son intimidados por la ortodoxia de la ciencia. Hemos visto que la epistemología pragmática de la ciencia nos ha traído horrores como el Napalm, potencializado los virus, el calentamiento global y ha contaminado el entorno Y sin embargo somos adictos a la ideología de explotación y la epistemología de las “verdades útiles” promovidas por Hawking y compañía. La ideología del positivismo continúa cautivando; su propaganda es implacable. Pero la sicología del positivismo no es tan útil” como aparenta ser. Finalmente no ha traído la “vida confortable” prometida por la tecnología. La psicología de la explotación no es solamente peligrosa para la vida de la mente, Al final es negadora de vida, negadora de alma y negativa. Nos dicen los físicos que el Universo Viviente y la consciencia no son cuestiones interesantes ni “útiles”, ni prácticas. Que exrtaño que ocupemos un universo viviente. Y sin embargo los científicos nieguen la vida. La vida es poesía. Los filósofos solían ser un intento de reconciliación de la poesía de la vida con la dura realidad de la existencia. Pero la filosofía está muerta, nos dicen. Desde la llegada del positivismo, los científicos están determinados a destruir la poesía de la filosofía. Repitiendo medias verdades de que la consciencia no es otra cosa sino actividad cerebral nuestros llamados “investigadores” se restringen objetivamente a sí mismos  sólo para el estudio de los “estados de consciencia, al estudio de los efectos de la consciencia. Al estudiar los estados de consciencia, la propia consciencia desaparece. Pero la desaparición del alma es el proyecto que se halla en el centro del positivismo. La Conciencia y la razón ¿Por qué no podemos estudiar la conciencia espiritual a través del uso de la razón? Un laboratorio criminal para estudiar el ADN tiene que quemar muestras de tejido que contengan ADN con el fin de estudiarlo, en el examen y prueba algo complicado, componentes orgánicos, químicos vivos, los reactivos destruyen  mismo cuerpo que van a examinar. Todo eso que se obtiene en el estudio es el producto de la descomposición, los remanentes de un organismo muerto. Esto es algo que pasa cuando la ciencia aplica su análisis a la consciencia. Tratando de estudiar el ama a través de razpon metacognitiva es como ir afuera de tu casa y mirar hacia adentro de la ventana para ver si hay alguien en casa. Debido a que el sujeto y el objeto de estudio son uno, nada se aprende. Es un ejerciscio que es una especie de espejismo celebrado por Jorge Luis Borges en su historia La librería de Babel. Como filósofo Español Miguel de Unamuno pone en Un Sentid Trágico de la Vida, los materialistas no encuentran el Yo, ya que buscan por estados de consciencia en lugar de por la propia alma.; “Tomando como punto de partida el hecho evidente de que los estados contradictorios pasan a través de nuestra consciencia, no tuvieron éxito en concebir la consciencia misma, el “Yo”. Preguntarle a un hombre acerca de su “Yo” es como preguntarle acerca de su cuerpo. “La naturaleza del ser, o la consciencia eterna, pueden intuirse, por supuesto, a través de la persistencia de la memoria, o de la continuidad del tiempo. El estudio de la memoria es otra área a través de la cual podemos intentar descubrir la característica innata del ser viviente. La persistencia de la memoria, entonces me parecerá ser evidencia indiscutible que “Yo soy el hoy” deriva, de una serie de estados de consciencia continuos, de quién era yo en mi cuerpo hace veinte años. Esto halla eco en las antiguas enseñanzas de Kṛṣṇa en el Gitopanishad en donde el alma se define como un ser eterno, que resiste a los cambios del tiempo: “Como el alma encarnada constantemente pasa, en este cuerpo, de la niñez, a la juventud y a la vejez, igualmente el alma pasa hacia otro cuerpo al morir. El alma auto-realizada no es desconcertada por esos cambios… Puesto que el alma ahí ni nace ni muere nunca. No ha cesado de existir, ni una vez ha sido nada más.  No ha nacido, es eterna, existe siempre, es inmortal y original (primigenia) No muere cuando el cuerpo es asesinado.” "Bhagavad-Gita Tal como es, traducción de.
